Responsible Travel Commitment

Travel has shaped my life in the best ways, and I want to make sure I leave the places I visit in good condition for the next person, the next generation, and the wildlife that call them home. This page outlines the principles I follow when I’m hiking, cycling, exploring wildlife areas, or travelling in general. They guide how I write my content and how I choose what to feature on The Planet Edit.

Respect for Nature

I spend a lot of time in national parks, forests, mountains, and coastal areas, and I try to minimise my footprint wherever I go. I stay on marked trails, avoid sensitive areas, and follow local rules, even when nobody’s watching. When I’m cycling, I avoid disturbing wildlife and stick to designated routes to help protect fragile landscapes.

Wildlife Comes First

Wildlife encounters are some of my favourite travel moments, but I’m careful about how I approach them. I don’t feed animals, I keep a safe distance, and I support ethical experiences only. Whether it’s whale watching in Sri Lanka or a safari in Botswana, I avoid tours or attractions that exploit animals or encourage unnatural behaviour.

Choosing Ethical Operators

When I join group trips, I choose companies that care about the places they travel through and the people who live there. I often book with operators like G Adventures and Intrepid because they openly support local communities and follow strong environmental practices. Any tour or experience I recommend on this blog is chosen with these values in mind.

Supporting Local Communities

Responsible travel isn’t only about protecting natural places. I also try to support small, independent businesses wherever I go, whether that’s staying in family-run guesthouses, eating at local cafes, or choosing local guides who know the area well. I avoid activities that harm or exploit local communities or their land.

Sustainable Transport Choices

I prefer exploring on foot or by bike whenever I can. In cities, I use public transport rather than unnecessary car journeys. For longer trips, I plan my itineraries to make the most of each destination rather than constantly flying between places. I also book direct flights wherever possible, as take-off and landing are where aeroplanes consume the most fuel.

Honest, Helpful Travel Writing

Everything I write on The Planet Edit is based on real, first-hand experience. I do not write about places I’ve never visited, and I do not use AI to generate content, simply because integrity and trust are important to me. (Full disclaimer: I do use AI tools to spell-check). I share the good and the bad so readers can travel more safely, respectfully, and informed. I avoid promoting unethical attractions, I disclose partnerships and gifted experiences, and I do my best to update posts when information changes. If you notice an inaccuracy in my writing, please do reach out to lauren@theplanetedit.com to let me know.

Continuous Learning

Responsible travel isn’t a fixed list; it’s something I’m always learning more about. I’m open to new research, local knowledge, and better ways of travelling thoughtfully. As this blog grows, I strive to keep improving the way I approach sustainability and ethical travel.
